Do not get left behind and make sure that at the very least you place a few of these coins into your investment portfolio. To our South African clients these coins are particularly special as they are mementos of South Africa’s most favoured and loved son, Nelson Mandela. It is true to be said that anything that has the Mandela name or picture attached to its sells like hot cakes and that is also true for these coins too. But something that is more important than that is these coins are a numismatic legacy that is placing South Africa at the very top of the world coin collectors list when they see that they can own a rare Mandela proof coin.

A grading scale is used to describe a coin’s condition. Mint State is an uncirculated coin graded in terms of a 70-point numerical scale, commonly used and was adapted by the NGC. The NGC grades coins on a numerical scale from 1 to 70, with 70 being the highest grade assigned. We currently stock a Mint State 66 (MS66) and a Mint State 67 (MS67). Both of these coins are highly desirable and are considered to be brilliant uncirculated coins.

Getting all of this right and minting reasonably attractive business strikes makes the MS67 grading an extremely high grade. The fact that there are only 22 MS68's and only 10 MS69's proves this.

You can view the census report on www.ngccoin.com

"MS" stands for Mint State and 66 is a grade number on a scale of 1 to 70. Mint state coins are coins in the same condition that they were in just after leaving the mint, with no evidence of wear or handling.

Nelson Mandela is the most recognizable person in the world today. He spent 27 years of his life in prison that normally would make a person angry and embittered. Yet he came out of prison as a spokesman for South Africa and Africa. He is the consciousness of our nation, showing humility and humbleness that has united all South Africans. He is an inspiration to us all.

South African Reserve Bank Governor Tito Mboweni indicated that the portrait of Mandela wearing his signature pattern shirt on the coins differentiates him from other portrayals of states persons on coins.

This is a snippet from Nelson Mandela’s 1994 inaugural speech that says a lot about this great man:

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves; Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented & fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of the Universe. Your playing small doesn't serve the world.
There is nothing enlightening about shrinking so that others won't feel insecure around you.
We are born to make manifest the glory of the Universe that is within us,
It is not just in some of us: it is in every single one of us.
And as we let our light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
And as we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

- Nelson Mandela Excerpt from 1994 Inaugural Presidential Speech
